Face the light, keep the door in view, leave 30 inches behind the chair.
A desk is where you spend hours, so it gets the best of the room: the light, and a view of the door.
The light
With a good window, the desk faces it, floating in front or along the sill, with a sheer or shade to soften glare on the screen. Without one, float the desk facing the room with the door in view and the window to the side.
Against a wall, set the desk at right angles to the window so the light falls from the side away from your writing hand.
The desk
| Size | |
|---|---|
| Height | 28 to 30″ |
| Depth | 24 to 30″ |
| Width, one screen | 48 to 60″ |
| Width, two screens | 60 to 72″ |
| In a nook | 36 to 42″ |
The chair
Leave 30 inches behind the desk for the chair to roll, 36 when a path passes behind it, and 24 inches of knee room underneath.
The screen
The top of the screen sits at or just below eye level, an arm's length away.
Blank Space places the desk by the light first, then checks the chair's room to roll back.
