A living room by Studio DEA in late sun: a sling chair on a woven rug under a pleated pendant

Every room

How high to hang art

Centre it at 57 inches, then let the furniture decide.

Most art hangs too high. Eye level is the rule, whatever the ceiling.

The centre

Measure to the middle of the piece: 57 inches off the floor, the gallery standard. Add half the frame's height to 57 to find where the top edge goes.

Over furniture

Above a sofa or bed, the bottom of the frame sits 6 to 10 inches above the piece, with 8 the sweet spot over a sofa. Above a console or sideboard, 4 to 10. Size the art, or the whole group, to two thirds of the furniture's width.

A gallery wall

Treat it as one piece: centre the whole group at 57 inches, with frames 2 to 3 inches apart (3 to 4 for large frames).

Give art its own wall, apart from the TV, so each gets a look.

Blank Space sizes the art to the furniture under it and shows where it hangs.
